What is GEO?
Generative engine optimization—improving how your brand shows up in AI-generated answers—with realistic expectations.
GEO (generative engine optimization) is the practice of improving how your content is understood, cited, and surfaced when users ask questions to AI assistants and other generative answer systems—not only traditional search result rankings.
The term is still informal in the industry; you may see overlap with AI search optimization and answer engine optimization (AEO). We treat GEO as the umbrella for “being legible to models and answer products.”
What teams actually do
- Clarify facts — consistent names, specs, and policies on canonical pages
- Structure content — headings, FAQs, tables, and schema where appropriate
- Earn third-party mentions — docs, press, and listings that models may retrieve
- Measure thoughtfully — track referrals and branded queries; avoid fake “GEO scores”
What GEO is not
- A replacement for technical SEO, accessibility, or site performance
- A guarantee of inclusion in any specific AI product’s answer
- A reason to publish low-quality pages aimed only at machines
